- Mr. Ting Heng kiong: “Although there are varies challenges but shipping industry still have big potential foregrounds.”
The Managing Director of SAN SUN SHIPPING SDN BHD stated that: “Our Company was established in year 1997 and mainly focused on transportation of logs, stone, sand and wooden product. In these recent years, we had expanded our business by transporting of crusher run, spun piles, PVC pipes and machineries. We have 2 cargo vessels were operating between 1, 2, 3 and 6 divisions at Sarawak.”
Shipping is a most important transportation industry in Sibu. Beside rivalry by lorry industry, it is also faced with other challenges.
The president of Sibu Coastal Shipowner Association also point out the challenges meets by this industry. He said that among 12 years they are involved in this field, the largest challenges was the rises of fuel price. The freight rates cannot adjust paralleling with the fuel prices due to many aspects to be considered. Some times, the operators can only adjust the freight rates after the fuel price had risen around RM1.00 per litter.
The second challenge is manpower problem. The quantity of qualified local seafarers is very limited and the operators are forced to look for the foreign seafarer like Indonesia, Myanmar and Pakistan. Normally a single manned vessel requested between 7 to 8 person foreign crews. Unfortunately the foreign crews always cannot stay for long period because of lack of technical knowledge or cannot adapt with the working environment.
The third challenge was appearing of wracks and the shallow riverbed along the Rejang River which always endanger the vessels. Some times, regularly changes of government policy also challenging the operator in their administration planning. The fifth challenge is recessions of global economic which slow down most of the construction side and factories production indirectly decrease the demand in this industry. We are hopefully government could encourage more company to involve in this industry and also subsidies to the trainers whose are follow the training courses.
In a former inauguration ceremony of Sibu Coastal Shipowner Association, Dato Seri Wong Soon Koh stated that 20% of the operators in this industrial are going to be eliminated, 60% are situated in straddle period and other 20% are in self transformation.
The president stated that: “whichever an economy status, shipping industry will always be the fastest affected industry.”
President also stated that: “At present, the registered cargo ship and express boat in Sarawak are around 4000 vessels but there are only 71 shipping companies which involved only 300 ships registered become member of association. The association are only collect RM50 for a registration fee and RM100 for an annual fee. So we are encourage more shipping company to join and enlarge the association, our target are 100 members. We are hopefully the association will growth and have enough strength to involve in the discussion with government in the future planning. In this thirtieth anniversary celebration, we hope to attract more then thousand participants to join us in the celebration.”
When asked about the ambition for an industry, the president expressed: “I hope that the economic will recover faster, Sarawak timber and palm oil industrial can revive as former thrive and reactive the shipping industry in this state.”
