Fast development of the world had brought to the increasing of demand, today not only the cargo ship but the tugboat and barge also able to sail cross country to the world.”
The executive director of GIMHWAK ENTERPRISE SDN. BHD. Mr. Renco stated that: “Our Company are type of family business. The company inherits by my father and until now is a third generation. Formerly we are focus on transporting logs and sand within the Sarawak region. In year 1997, we are started sailing to Sabah region. Until year 2003, we are started sailing the tugboat and barge to the peninsular Malaysia by carried the huge type machineries, building materials and scrap metal. We also learned that the maintenance costs of vessel which sailing in the river for 20 to 30 years are almost equal to two years old sea going vessel. This is because of the seawater and wave reaction causing faster erosion to the hull.
Besides, there are many complicated procedure to obtain the certificate or permit from the government department to operate in Peninsular. The official communication language, shipping permit and certificates and the satellite system which used English and Malay was a big challenge to the experienced chinese senior sailor. They have to continue learning, repeat practice and even transcript the general conversation to overcome the language barriers. Today many seafarers become unqualified because of holding an invalid certificate which approved during colony time. The experience captain and engineer have to attend the new courses and the examination again to obtain a new license. This is the extremely hard for them whose are ages more then fifty. The very limited of qualified local seaman forced the ship operators have to hire the candidates from the foreign country and these indirectly increase the operating cost. Follow by the opening of Sarawak Maritime School in Sibu, we are hopefully the manpower problem can be overcome within 3 to 5 years.”
In year 2007, GIMHWAK ENTERPRISE SDN. BHD. succeeds to obtain of freight forwarding services, repair and construction of tugboat & barge International quality management certification ISO9001:2000.
