Congratulations on the 30th Anniversary of your association coastal shipping plays a vital role in the development of the state of Sarawak. The state of Sarawak has thirty two rivers totaling more than 3,000 nautical miles (5,500km). Without coastal and riverine shipping, the state of Sarawak will not be able to progress to the state that she is today. A majority of the rivers have shallow sand banks (bars) at the river mouth which does not permit large ocean liners to call at the state ports.
The Sibu Coastal Shipowners Association is the link to the development of the mighty Rejang Rivers, the interior and the state of Sarawak. The Rejang River is longest river in Sarawak and Malaysia. Without their financial commitment, version and close cooperation of the ships owners, all towns situated along this rivers would experience serious problems in terms of the transportation of food and raw materials. Not all row materials could be transported by road and transportation by water is the only means. Transportation by water is the most economical, environmentally friendly and safest means of transportation.
I wish the association success and prosperity in the years ahead. “Bon Voyage”
